Democrat for State Representative
Quality Education for All Children
I believe in strong, adequately funded public schools. I will battle for a fair and responsible education budget that increases funding for schools and protects the needs of our most vulnerable children.
We must increase accountability of schools to their students. I will work to empower our state education board to hold our districts accountable to all their students, and mandate changes that will bring those policies in line with Federal regulations. Furthermore, we must fairly fund all levels of education, and ensure they are training the next generation for the realities of their future.
I support protecting and expanding early childhood and preschool programs, including First Steps, a program which reaches young children born with disabilities, and has been under attack by Governor Blunt and the Republican Legislature.
Access to Affordable Healthcare
I am passionate about expanding access to affordable healthcare in Missouri. I will fight to reinstate the 100,000 Missourians tossed out of healthcare by the Republican Legislature, and then work to expand access to affordable healthcare for all Missourians.
We can stretch our tax dollars further, and will sponsor bills to reduce healthcare provider fraud and waste, help Missouri better leverage available Federal funds, and effect cost controls on healthcare, especially the spiraling cost of prescription drugs.
Protecting Government Integrity
I stand against the efforts of the Blunt Administration and Republican Legislature to repeal the voter-approved campaign finance limits for candidates. Further, I will sponsor legislation to end the “money laundering” run around that wealthy special interests use to funnel money in excess of those limits to candidates.
Missouri’s plan for selecting judges is so admired it is known across the U.S. as the “Missouri Plan.” I pledge to fight to keep the integrity of the judiciary intact and oppose plans to further politicize the appointment of judges.
Protecting Missouri’s Environmental and Economic Future
The future of Missouri Energy is rapidly approaching. To deal with that, we must aggressively pursue policies that not only reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil, but create a thriving renewable and alternative energy economy in Missouri.
While pushing for energy independence, we must also take time to protect and enhance Missouri’s natural resources, which are the source of the largest portion of Missouri’s tourism revenue. Not only is environmental conservation the right choice, it’s the profitable one as well.
